The competition
About 10 years ago, I knew this guy that claimed to be a programmer. He said he knew dozens of programming languages. He said that he could build apps. He said that he was full-stack. He said he was good at it. And he even claimed that he loved it.
He wasn’t any of those things.
He was a slacker. He had no ambition. He said that he knew a programming language after writing a hello world script in it. Worst of all, he didn’t love programming. He just wanted to be seen as loving programming.
You have a degree? So what?
I don’t even think this guy had a Github. Somehow, he still had a job.
Who I am
I do more in one day than that guy did in a year. I wake up thinking about programming. I take care of a family. I contribute to stuff that others care about.
What did this guy contribute. Nothing.
I’m 10x more hire-able, I’m 10x more productive, I’m 10x the man… that I was.
The real 10x developer
Stop comparing yourself to others and start comparing yourself to who you were yesterday. I know what it is like to only care about how others see you. It’s easy to point your finger and say that you are doing better than the other guy, but the truth is, you have no idea.
Yeah, the other guy may not have as many accolades, but you don’t know what he had to do to get where he is. You never will. If you were born in his place, you may be 1/10th of the way he is. You could say then, that he’s the 10x engineer.
You do know what you had to do to get where you are. Be proud of your accomplishments, and look forward to bettering yourself tomorrow.
You made mistakes, you wasted time, you are not that guy pal. But, you will be tomorrow.
10 years is a long time. You can get where you want to be.
Looking forward to ten years from now when I’m 100x.
